The BLK ODYSSY project, led by Sam Houston, is motivated by emancipation. Houston, who was born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey and now resides in Austin, Texas, delves into his own background as a Black musician and the environment he grew up in on his first album under this new name, BLK VINTAGE. It's an album that draws heavily on personal experiences while also addressing the condition of Black Americans worldwide. Even though the record opts for mellow tones and relaxed lyrics rather than overt protest, Houston's music is nonetheless influenced by a philosophical outlook.
Houston opted to forgo the fame he had attained as an Americana artist in favor of writing songs that would express his personal experiences and viewpoint. BLK ODYSSY is the end result and its debut album, BLK VINTAGE, has the urgency of a musician who has discovered their authentic sound. There is "1980," which slinks along to the rich funk-soul of performers like Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge, but Houston's half-rapped cadence is entirely distinct and totally alluring. The lighter moments were just as painful as the labor that was reflected through Houston's trauma. Houston does, however, possess the exceptional capacity to display several aspects of himself. BLK VINTAGE is a remarkable debut and one of the most impactful and timely releases of the year thanks to its strong blend of politically motivated street anthems, party-ready funk songs and top-down, head-nodding beats.
