Prateek Kuhad has quietly established a distinctive position for himself as an internationally renowned pop musician from India for a little over ten years. Kuhad, who hails from Jaipur in the north and sings in both Hindi and English, has little trouble establishing relationships with his diverse fan base. Kuhad, who was lauded as "one of the nation's leading singer-songwriters" by Rolling Stone India, saw a new surge of international acclaim after former President Barack Obama added the heartbreaking breakup ballad "cold/mess" to his yearly list of favorite songs. Kuhad follows up his well-received Hindi EP, Shehron Ke Raaz, with his third studio album, The Way That Lovers Do, which is distributed by Elektra Records.
Kuhad, who lists Elliott Smith as a big influence, didn't necessarily set out to challenge perceptions of popular Indian music, which is typically ingrained in the culture of Bollywood films. As a child in Jaipur, Kuhad learned to play the guitar and listened to his parents' CDs of Cliff Richard and Harry Belafonte. He acquired modern pop recordings and CDs of the Backstreet Boys and other '90s Top 40 radio fodder from his elder sister, but it wasn't until he came to New York to attend college that his musical prowess truly took off. He started playing small venues throughout the city in the early '10s. Since then, Kuhad has returned to India but has frequently visited many US cities to play and record music. To that purpose, he recorded 11 brand-new songs for The Way That Lovers Do in Seattle's private Bear Creek Studio about human love, camaraderie and communication with Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Vance Joy).
