When Lush's reunion tour ended, Piroshka got going. A new music project with guitarist/vocalist Miki Berenyi and Modern English bassist Mick Conroy, who had joined the band for the tour's last performance in Manchester, was proposed by drummer Justin Welch, previously of Elastica. The band's origins, however, go farther than that: Welch and Berenyi have been close friends since the heyday of their respective bands in the 90s; Berenyi and Moose vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist KJ McKillop are partners and Conroy was a member of a later-era McKillop band. Welch, Berenyi and Conroy began swapping demos that merged shoegaze, post-punk and guitar pop in ways that didn't sound precisely like anything they'd ever done before after the chemistry they felt during the rehearsals for the Manchester gig inspired them to keep making music.
McKillop's keyboards, guitar and lyrics completed the sound and line-up of Piroshka, giving it its final form. Simon Raymonde, one-time Cocteau Twin and his label Bella Union quickly signed the band. Their debut album, Brickbat, which featured brass from Terry Edwards and Fiona Brice's arrangements for strings, was released. McKillop and Conroy grabbed the reins on an introspective set of songs about relationships and memories for Piroshka's following full-length, Love Drips and Gathers..
