Waylon Payne, a member of the country music elite and a teenage Baptist preacher who later became an addict and actor, sings with terrible clarity about dads and sons, faith and addiction, recovery and renewal. His character-rich compilation pays homage to a style of singing stories that conveyed hidden information and hinted at mystery. Payne has experienced the dreadful power that secrets may possess over the years and has come to understand the transforming benefits of sharing them. Finally, he is in a position to use that ability to produce transcendent art.
Primarily at Southern Ground Nashville, a restored century-old church just off Music Row that formerly housed Monument Studios, Payne recorded Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me. At Monument, Sammi Smith, Payne's mother, recorded her legendary rendition of Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night." Payne claims that he "stood in the exact area she stood and sung while she was pregnant with me" when he recorded his vocals. Although Payne started working on Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me a decade ago in Texas, where he had support from family and friends, he may have recorded it in Nashville. He  couldn't even write for a while, he admits. "Because I had severely damaged my brain, I was unable to think clearly. After I sobered up, everything arrived."
Each song is a reflection of a distinct circumstance in Payne's life. Together, though, they depict a prodigal son returning home—not to his biological family, but rather to the authentic version of himself that he had once come close to leaving behind..
