Williams has continuously been able to develop as an artist because she has always explored outside of such genre constraints, even though her best-known work is characterized by rich and honest music, influenced by the greats - from Nick Drake to Joni Mitchell and beyond.
Positive reviews greeted the publication of Williams' first album, Dog Leap Stairs, which was produced for under £80. However, it was the success of her second album, Little Black Numbers, which led to a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize shortlist. Her third album, Old Low Light, continued her relatively busy release schedule. It was quickly followed by "Relations," a covers album that featured delicate reworkings of Big Star, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and more.
Along with poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, she was chosen to serve as a judge for the Ted Hughes Award for Poetry presented by the British Poetry Society. She also performed specially commissioned music for the BBC Radio 4 broadcast "A Poet Laureate's Peterloo," which honored the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre and featured Carol, Clare Shaw and Mark Pajak and presented by Ian McMillan..
