The Format Booking Agency Profile

Book The Format for your next corporate event, function, or private party.
The Format, an American indie rock band formed in 2002, is known for its unique blend of indie, alternative, punk, and folk music with influences of 1960s and 1970s pop music. The duo of Nate Ruess and Sam Means, childhood friends, formed the band after playing together in the band Nevergonnascore. The band's name, The Format, was chosen as a tongue-in-cheek jab at the music industry's preference for a standardized "format" for a hit.

Their debut studio album, Interventions + Lullabies, was released in 2003 and became locally popular on Phoenix radio station KEDJ, leading to the band's signing with Elektra Records. The album sold over 100,000 copies in the US, and their fan base grew rapidly due to extensive touring and word of mouth. The band's second EP, Snails, was released with Atlantic Records in 2005. But the label's executives were not impressed with their demos, which were heavily influenced by 1970s pop music, and the band was subsequently released from their contract.

Undeterred, The Format decided to release their second album, Dog Problems, themselves through their newly established imprint label, The Vanity Label. The album was leaked two months before its release, so the band decided to release it immediately via the Nettwerk Music Store for $7.99, which led to the sale of over 2,000 digital copies before the album's official release. Dog Problems received critical acclaim, and The Format gained more attention, touring consistently and supporting The All American Rejects in the UK.

In 2007, the band offered Dog Problems for free on their official website for a limited time, and it was downloaded by 36,000 people. The band played shows in Tokyo, Japan, and was featured on Last Call with Carson Daly twice. They also co-headlined with Guster on their Campus Consciousness tour and toured with various other bands.

After releasing several albums and EPs, the band announced a hiatus in 2008. However, in 2020, The Format announced a return from their hiatu.

The final The Format booking price is contingent on many variables and the booking fee we may show is based on a range derived from our past experience with what will The Format charge for an event. An example fee to book The Format is in the starting range of $15,000-$24,999. However, any recent popularity change would cause a price fluctuation well beyond this example. Also, their speaking fee might be different than the fee shown for the cost to perform or to just appear. Popularity, career stage, along with current demand will cause fluctuations in their speaking price as well. The final booking price may be more than what is shown, but you should at least have a budget within that range for them to consider an appearance, performance or speaking engagement.
CTI negotiates on behalf of professional event planners and talent buyers for paid appearances! We cannot give out direct contact information of the The Format agent or help distribute fan mail, personal messages, gifts, requests for free appearances, or donations of time. The The Format manager and agent will only work with us if we present them with funded offers for their client to work your event.
There is low probability to book The Format for a party with anything substantially less than the published booking cost price range. We will negotiate with the The Format agent on your behalf if your funding is in place. By not having funding ready then it will more difficult to book The Format, because they get many offers to work events that are at or above asking price. It is also important to consider the travel costs when researching the The Format booking fee, as additional expenses like this, as well as an entourage of staff and equipment, are not necessarily built-in to the booking fee range shown. If your budget does not factor that in, then there is no benefit for them to want to be hired. We do not personally speak for The Format, but in our experience in booking talent for over 25 years, this is generally the outcome of inadequate funding.
