Rei Ami, an alt-pop singer and producer of Korean descent, rose to fame with early tracks including "Dictator" and "Make It Mine." She proceeded to make dark, daring pop throughout the course of the following two years as she prepared for the release of her debut, Foil.
Rei Ami was born in Seoul and immigrated to the US when she was six years old. She was raised in a conservative Christian home where she learned to play the piano and the guitar. Her parents paid for her lessons in the hopes that she would sing at church services. The household's ban on "worldly" music only encouraged Ami to discover a wide variety of various genres, with early influences spanning from Luther Vandross to Britney Spears.
The vocalist entered the market with the first single "Make It Mine," fusing menacing bedroom pop with a variety of genres, from synth-funk to trap, after gaining viral success on video streaming sites with her music "Trippin Tots". Ami's vocal prowess was on display as she alternated between sensuous tones, husky rapping and vocal manipulation akin to PC Music, all while delivering lyrics that were darkly poetic and touched on relationships and retribution. Later that year, two additional singles, "Snowcone" and "Dictator" arrived, showcasing Ami's vocal range over a continually morphing canvas of genre and style.
