The band members first became friends while taking the music program at Pimlico School, which is now Pimlico Academy. They initially started the band as a pair, but after noticing a gap in their lineup, they invited their former classmates Rox Barker and Geordan Reid-Campbell to play guitar and vocals, respectively. David Turay, a saxophonist, joined the group after getting to know the others through the jazz community. The wood from which some drumsticks are fashioned, hickory, gave the band its name.
On September 30, 2012, they released their debut single, "Lines," which was picked up by Gilles Peterson of BBC Radio 6 Music. In February 2013, "Cold Air," the group's second single, made its debut on Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 6 Music program. The Hics were promoted by REAL STAR RECORDS before being mentioned in NME magazine in March 2013. As a teaser for their next EP, which was released the following month, they released the song "Tangle" in July 2013. After receiving positive reviews for the EP, the band headlined a sold-out event in London in August 2013.
