American stage director Rachel Chavkin, who was born on July 20, 1980, is renowned for her innovative work in the theatrical sector. She received considerable acclaim for her work as a director on the musicals Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 and Hadestown. Both of these shows received Tony Award nominations for Best Direction of a Musical, with Hadestown finally taking home the prize in 2019.
Chavkin was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, and comes from a family of Washington, D.C.-based civil rights attorneys. Despite identifying as a non-practicing Jew, she has a strong sense of justice and a concern for social concerns thanks to her upbringing.
Chavkin developed her skills and widened her range of artistic expression by pursuing her love of theater and earning a BFA from New York University, followed by an MFA from Columbia University.
At the moment, Chavkin is the respected artistic director of the theatrical collective The TEAM, where she has produced and directed a number of notable plays. Her partnerships with The TEAM have given rise to award-winning productions that have not only received favorable reviews but have also toured abroad. Architecting, Mission Drift, and Roosevelt are a few prominent projects.
Chavkin has engaged in a range of artistic endeavors during the course of her career. Three Pianos, which had its world premiere at the Ontological-Hysteric Theater in March 2010 and then enjoyed a successful run at the New York Theatre Workshop from December 2010 to January 2011, served as an example of her directorial skill. She received the coveted Obie Award and the Obie Special Citation in 2010 for her outstanding work on this production.
Taylor Mac, an actor and playwright with whom Chavkin collaborated on works like The Lily's Revenge, Act 2 (HERE), and Chris Thorpe, with whom she worked on projects like Confirmation and Status, are two examples of exceptional artists with whom Chavkin has worked collaboratively..
