When Justin Foley, the drummer for Killswitch Engage, realized he wouldn't be seeing his regular guys for a long, he had the idea for Lybica. He had been working on some demos and had finally chosen to share them with a few close pals in south Florida. Quarantine days still needed to be used wisely. After meeting fellow musicians Joey Johnson (Gravel Kings, Barriers Now Bridges, Days Spent) and Doug French (Gravel Kings), they frequently discussed but never really got around to jamming together. Drummers Justin and Doug often talked about doing something new that would allow them to step away from the drum set.
Joey Johnson, a guitarist, grew up performing live music all across Florida and was greatly influenced by early punk, hardcore and metal. As a result, when Doug and Joey finally heard Justin's demos, they were really impressed. Justin and Doug, who were learning the parts on instruments they had never played before, exchanged music over email for several months. The drum beats from the demos were blaring through the PA speakers when they finally began to play together. They soon had enough material for a whole album, and the band's approach was beginning to take form. Lybica is the earliest feline species known to have been domesticated by humans. It was named after a tiny wildcat species endemic to Africa that is largely regarded as the forerunner of the contemporary house cat.
Today, Lybica the band are just as addicting as catnip after 10,000 years. Lybica is ready to go above and beyond with the recent addition of drummer Chris Lane (A Brilliant Lie) to the lineup..
