Bassett, who was still learning English, joined sports to make friends with her classmates. Before participating in track & field and triathlon competitions, she attempted basketball, softball, golf and tennis.
She was made aware of the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), which provided her with a grant to support her training as well as an opportunity to teach young amputees and attend running clinics. She put forth a lot of effort to earn a spot on the inaugural American Paralympic Team. Scout raced at the U.S. Paralympic Track and Field London Trials in an effort to realize her Paralympic aspirations, finishing third in the 100m and second in the 200m.
Scout, who is 4'9", has won the 100-meter national championship seven times. She now holds the 400m world record as well as the 200m record for America. Scout was a member of the USA Paratriathlon National Team before participating in track, where she earned three silver medals and one bronze at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships..
