It's typical to hear the phrase "country music ain't like it used to be" when modern influences broaden the genre's boundaries. For Zach, who grew up on a ranch in Sunnyside, Washington, old-school country is the only genre that seems very modern. While travelling in an old Chevy truck to tend animals during his boyhood, he recalled rocking a Marty Robbins "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" CD. He and his siblings started the bluegrass group "Top String" when he was seven years old.
He played in several bluegrass bands during his teenage years and the first few years of his twenties, including Modern Tradition (the SPBGMA international band competition champions), with whom he had a number of songs on bluegrass radio, including the number-one tune "Like It Ain't No Thing." He traveled to Nashville in pursuit of his honky-tonk goals, where he signed a significant licensing agreement with Bob Doyle's Major Bob Music. Since the relocation, he has made a name for himself as a performer to watch. He has been invited to appear at the Grand Ole Opry multiple times, and he premiered his first country hit, "Cold Beer & Country Music.".
