Beth Jeans Houghton, a musician, songwriter, animator and video director, reinterpreted her music to create the swaggering, heart-on-sleeve rock of Du Blonde. Houghton combined emotional lyricism with the gritty tones of punk, blues, garage rock and soul on albums like the one he self-produced, Lung Bread for Daddy. On Homecoming, she later allowed some pop influences to show through without sacrificing any of the boldness or candor with which she deals with mental illness and grief in her songs.
Houghton, who was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, started composing and singing when she was still a teenager. She originally performed in front of a crowd as a self-taught guitarist, eventually sharing the stage alongside performers like Imogen Heap, St. Vincent and Euros Childs.
Following the Welcome Back to Milk tour, Houghton started working on a number of projects, including Butt Hurt, a comic book series, as well as directing and animating music videos for performers including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ezra Furman and LUMP. She started working on the second Du Blonde album after getting treatment for her long-term anxiety and depression difficulties. Houghton handled production responsibilities and performed the majority of the instruments throughout the album's recording sessions in London and Oakland, California. She collaborated with drummer Sam Durkes and bassist Jorgen Jorgenson Briggs to complete the album's sound. Lung Bread for Daddy, the unyielding outcome, was delivered to Moshi Moshi.
