The three-person "Los Angeles" collaborative long-player was the result of an unquenchable curiosity. The Cure's Lol Tolhurst and Budgie from Siouxsie & The Banshees and The Creatures, as well as legendary producer and multi-instrumentalist Garret 'Jacknife' Lee, make up this unlikely alt-supergroup. Together, they have spent the last few years crafting one of the most extraordinary albums to come out in recent years.
When reading the tracklist and seeing names like James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Bobby Gillespie, Civil Rights avant-gardist Lonnie Holley, Starcrawler wild kid Arrow de Wilde and The Edge from U2 listed as guests, one would understandably wonder what the 13-track long-player will sound like.
The solution is a hard-hitting and compulsively exploratory 55-minute electronic headbend built on unmatched rhythmic expertise, fleshed out with an arsenal of synths, guitars (Jacknife's forté) and supplemental percussion. It is frequently overlaid with elite-class strings and brass, then universally twisted, manipulated and quite masterfully sculpted by Lee, wearing his super-producer's hat.
According to the title, "Los Angeles" takes the audience on a journey through the seedy underbelly of modern LaLaLand, the city that gave it birth.
