Since the first Dictators album was released in 1975, these tenacious pre-punk New Yorkers deserve a great deal of credit for blazing a trail, combining the best elements of loud, hard, fast rock 'n' roll with junk culture and creating an iconic sound that has been imitated by innumerable other bands. Though stylistically and consistently from track to track, the band's albums are all excellent. As the brilliant music writer Richard Meltzer's apprentices, the Dictators were instrumental in turning a great deal of fandom's madcap theoretical speculation about the potential of rock 'n' roll into pitifully fantastic actuality. The Dictators, who had first formed as a tribute/response to the MC5, Flamin Groovies, New York Dolls and the Stooges, ended up inspiring and being important to generations that came after them.
Following the publication of Every Day is Saturday, an album of demos and outtakes, and another live record, Viva Dictators. The group disbanded until Andy Shernoff and Ross the Boss reconnected over outstanding Dictators business. Ross proposed that they reunite as a band. Andy consented, subject to the stipulation that Albert Bouchard (Blue Öyster Cult), a longtime friend and collaborator, take over as drummer. With great enthusiasm, Albert proposed Keith Roth (Sirius XM DJ/Frankenstein 3000) to take up the vacant position of singer/guitarist. Three songs by the resurrected band, God Damn New York, Let's Get The Band Back Together, and Festivus, continue the tongue-in-cheek humor, social criticism and exuberance characteristic of The Dictators as they continue to perform..
