Working in government, both in the White House and the Pentagon; the investigation that came out of her time in Washington, D.C.; her involvement in media projects as both a subject and a producer; her work as an entrepreneur and a designer and finally, her work in education, all provide Monica with a unique and profound perspective. Following her graduation from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, with a degree in psychology, she studied abroad and obtained a Master's degree in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
When Lewinsky's intimate relationship with then-President Bill Clinton was made public in 1998 as part of a federal inquiry, she gained widespread public recognition. In an instant, she transformed from a very private person to a well-known personality on the international scene.
With the emergence of the Internet and rival 24-hour news networks, the media environment was shifting as the investigation progressed. Lewinsky observed the growth in the spread of online humiliation and shame following the emergence of social media in recent years. Having gone through both, on the largest scale and at a young age, she recognized that she could contribute to the public conversation on online harassment and try to bring about change.
Lewinsky wrote an essay for Vanity Fair called "Shame and Survival" in which she combined cultural insights with her own life experiences. The article received a National Magazine Award nomination.
She later spoke at the Vancouver annual TED Conference. More than 10 million people have seen her speech, "The Price of Shame." She has also delivered the Ogilvy + Inspire Lecture at Cannes Lions and talked at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit..
