The Gang of Four formed in Leeds, UK, in 1976. Bassist Dave Allen was quickly discovered by founding members Hugo Burnham, Andrew Gill, and Jon King to round out the legendary lineup, whose debut was the Damaged Goods EP on independent label Fast Product. Following their first US tour that summer, they signed with Warner Bros. Records, who subsequently released Entertainment! in the US in 1980. Their first album, Entertainment!, was released by EMI Records in the UK and Europe. The album is regarded as a landmark in the post-punk genre and has received high praise from critics. It was named the fifth best album of 1979 by NME and number 273 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums ever made.
