He completed four operational deployments in the A-7E and F/A-18 and accumulated over 8,000 flight hours and 663 carrier landings in tactical jet aircraft while serving as a U.S. Navy Captain (Ret.). He flew three space missions, totaling 464 days in orbit, after being chosen by NASA in 2000. After serving as the Space Shuttle Atlantis' pilot (STS-129), he went on to command the ISS during Expeditions 41 and 42, performing four spacewalks.
