Lately, Stephan Moccio has been doing a lot of thinking. The Grammy- and Oscar-nominated composer and pianist, who has spent a quarter-century writing iconic tunes, could readily rest on a catalog of chart-toppers including Celine Dion’s “A New Day Has Come,” Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball,” the Weeknd’s “Earned It,” and “I Believe,” the theme song for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Instead, he’s thinking back to the turn of the 2000, when in a liminal area between his precocious boyhood and his blockbuster songwriting career, he accepted a gig playing piano six nights a week in the lobby of the Four Seasons in Toronto. On his fourth solo LP--Scenes From a Velvet Room, due out via Decca Records--he narrates that story with a tableau vivant's detail, and the clarity of retrospection.
Moccio has no problem with his distinctive blend of jazz, lounge and neoclassical being utilized as an ambient mood-setter, music for studying, meditating, meeting up with a buddy over a glass of wine. Deep listeners to Scenes From a Velvet Room will hear the "I Break Everything I Love" theme and the tiny errors Moccio left in some of the numerous tracks he recorded in one take. If you don’t, your world will be improved anyhow, like that of the patrons of the Four Seasons Toronto, whose talks were sweetened by the piano notes coming in from the opposite side of the room.
