Michael Franti is an American poet and musician who is also a vocal supporter of a wide variety of causes relating to the promotion of peace and social justice. Franti began his career as a poet while he was a student at the University of San Francisco. Soon after that, Franti went out and bought himself a bass, and he started incorporating his written words into the sound of his hip-hop, punk, and reggae music. In 1991, Michael Franti became a member of The Disposable Heroes of Hypocrisy, a politically charged band whose lyrics were about the injustices that exist in the world. Michael Franti has been a member of the band ever since. Because so many people were moved by the band's lyrics, they were given the opportunity to open for U2 on their Zoo TV Tour.
