The band was formed by Schreifels and gathered veteran hardcore rock musicians from bands such as Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, and Iceburn. The band's name comes from a video game made by Capcom called, Rival Schools: United By Fate. Rival School's first release was a series of EPs that were collaborations with other bands and eventually a full length album titled, United By Faith, in 2001. A couple songs from the album were played frequently on MTV in the US and UK. The band had a falling out during 2003 when drummer Ian Love left for another band.
