Nehlen was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and he began his career playing college football at Bowling Green State University before going on to begin his career as a football coach. Nehlen began his career as a coach first working as an assistant at Cincinnati and then at Bowling Green. After a year of working as an assistant at Bowling Green, Nehlen was promoted to head coach. After working as the head coach at Bowling Green for 8 years, Nehlen went on to work as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Michigan for two years before working as the head coach at West Virginia. During his 20 years at West Virginia, Nehlen helped them to win one Big East championship, was the Walter Camp Coach of the Year, Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year, AFCA Coach of the Year, Big East Coach of the Year, and won the Amos Alonza Stagg Award.
