Mike Greenwell, also known as “The Gator,” is a former professional left fielder who played in the MLB and spent the entirety of his MLB career playing with the Boston Red Sox. Greenwell was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and he began his career playing baseball as well as football in high school. From there, he went on to be drafted in the third round of the MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox. During his MLB career, Greenwell was named a two-time All Star and also earned the Silver Slugger Award. He was also a runner-up for the American League MVP Award and served as the team’s player representative for a while. He has also held the American League record for most game-winning RBIs in a single season with 23. Greenwell finished his MLB career with a .303 batting average, 130 home runs, and 726 runs batted in. After retiring from the MLB, Greenwell went on to sign with the Hanshin Tigers of Nippon Professional Baseball where he played for a season before retiring from baseball entirely after suffering from a herniated disc. Since retiring from baseball, Greenwell has been working as a player-coach for the Cincinnati Reds’ Double-A affiliate. He has also previously been an interim hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds and has also had a short career as a racecar driver where he raced in the City of Mansfield 250 and the O’Reilly 200.
