Pruitt was born in Houston, Texas, and he began his career playing football in high school before being recruited to play college football at the University of Oklahoma. While playing college football, Pruitt was a two-time All-American, and a two-time All-Big 8. He also placed second for voting in the Heisman Trophy. During his time playing college football, Pruitt made history being one of the first African-Americans to achieve All-American status. Since graduating, Pruitt has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Pruitt went on to be selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns where he spent a majority of his career. During his time with the Browns, Pruitt was a four-time Pro Bowl selection as well as a second-team All-Pro.
