Cappelletti was born in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, and he began his career playing football in high school before going on to play college football at Penn State where he was a defensive back. Cappelletti had a successful college career and was an unanimous All-American, UPI College Football Player of the Year, won the Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, and Heisman Trophy. After finishing his college career, Cappelletti went on to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. After playing with the Rams for four years, Cappelletti went on to play the rest of his NFL career with the San Diego Charges. Cappelletti finished his NFL career with 2,951 rushing yards, 3.6 rushing average and 24 rushing touchdowns. He has since been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and is also a member of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame..
