Kehres was born in Diamond, Ohio, and he began his career playing football in high school where he helped his team win the Portage County League championship. He went on to play college football at Mount Union where he set a school record with a 95-yard touchdown pass. After finishing his college career, Kehres went on to begin working as a graduate assistant coach for Bowling Green. As a coach, Kehres went on to work at Johnstown-Monroe High School, was an assistant coach and then head coach at Mount Union.
