Cole started working for the drum and bass label SOUR after graduating from City University as a tape operator and sound engineer for artists including Freq Nasty and Ed Rush. But what gave him the garage bug was working on Ramsey and Fen's 2-step remixes for Kym Mazelle. Between 1997 and 1999, he served as the go-to engineer and lead producer for tracks on the UK garage label V.I.P. (Very Important Plastic). He was also a pirate DJ on London Underground FM, spinning music with artists like the Dreem Teem.
From there, Cole wrote and created "Sincere" in 1998 with the use of an Atari and sampler. The song was finally chosen by Pete Tong and AM:PM and went on to become one of the first garage songs to chart in the top 40 in the U.K.
He joined Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud record label, where in 2000 he produced his debut album, also titled Sincere. This album brought him two top 15 singles on the U.K. Singles Chart, a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, a Brit Award nomination, and the MOBO's Best Producer award in 2001, defeating Dr. Dre.
