Stubb's political ascent continued as he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2008 following a scandal involving his predecessor. Stubb went on to become the Vice-President of the European Investment Bank in 2017 and announced his candidacy for the EPP nomination for President of the European Commission in the 2019 European Parliament election. Despite ultimately losing to Manfred Weber, Stubb continued to make significant contributions to European politics.
After his term at the European Investment Bank ended in January 2020, he was chosen as the Director and Professor of the School of Transnational Governance at the European University Institute, where he continues to promote excellence in education and research..
