John F. Kelly is an American retired U.S. Marine Corps general who has previously served as the 28th White House Chief of Staff. Kelly was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and he began his career in the government after he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He went on to serve with the 2nd Marine Division and was later discharged so that he could earn his degree. He later completed the Officer Candidates School and went on to be a second lieutenant. He then earned his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and then earned his M.A. from Georgetown University in National Security Affairs before earning his M.S. in Strategic Studies from the National Defense University. After returning to the military, Kelly served to go on to earn the rank of General, the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, and the Multinational Force West. He also served in the Persian Gulf War, the Iraq War and in the Operation Desert Storm. Kelly went on to earn awards such as the Defensive Distinguished Service Medal, and Defense Superior Service Medal.
